I have never been interested in politics. I believe I was born at a perfect time in history so I have never HAD to be concerned with politics. It didn’t matter because everything has been so good and we have had such a good life. I say that often and truly believe it. Now, however, I am worried about our country. I am patriotic – I love America, I love the US, I love this country. But it’s flailing and failing. I am getting more and more interested in the politics of it all. What makes this country tick? Is there anything I can do to help?

So, I started reading about it. Mike started reading about economics and politics a few years ago. He would pass along some articles here and there, but I never really got it. Never really cared. I hated econ in school, thought it was boring, so why would I care about it now? Now, however, I read about it everyday, and find it absolutely fascinating. I love the learning, yes I do!

I used to be a Democrat. Yep, I was. Mike was too. Up until just a few years ago even! I believe it’s how we were taught in school. Government is good. The bigger the better…it will take care of us! We were brainwashed – I don’t even really remember being taught other philosophies. Keynesian economics (don’t think I even learned that it was called that in school) is all that is taught, so how are we supposed to know that Austrian economics makes more sense and why isn’t it taught in schools? It’s irritating. Anyway, Mike and I did really well during the Clinton era. Really good. It’s when we made our money. I have since learned that it wasn’t because of him but since it was good during that era, I was impressed with him, and the democratic way.

Then things started to go wrong under Bush, and now Obama. For me. For my family. For the country. I started to get a bit worried. What could we do? Read. Read. and Read some more. Learn about it. Big government was failing me! How was it possible? It’s not what I was taught in school, how could it be?

Then Mike started to talk about being a Libertarian. Huh? What? I read more. Learned more. And figured out that Libertarianism is just plain common sense. Everything under the Libertarian philosophy makes sense to me. And the more I talk to other people about it, the more they realize that hey, I might be a Libertarian, too! It’s amazing that there is a political philosophy out there that explains everything that makes sense to me. I am enjoying learning more and more about it every single day. Every.Single.Day. Lewrockwell.com is my favorite, and an excellent resource. I also really respect and admire John Stossel, who turned from a big government advocate to a libertarian (because it also was logical and common sense to him!). We watch his show every week – haven’t missed one since it debuted. I have learned SO much from those 2 resources alone! Amazing. They have opened my eyes to logic and common sense.

And I can’t forget to mention Ron Paul of course. In 2008, Mike campaigned a bit for him here – he had a lot of fun doing that. We have a faded Ron Paul 2008 bumper sticker on the truck – it will soon be joined by a Ron Paul 2012 sticker. We heard him speak last year when he came through Boise. It was packed, and so very very interesting. I loved listening to him, and truly, passionately, with all my heart, think he is one of the very few people who could actually turn this country around. I really want this country to turn around, too, because I want to be able to stay here. Chile is still on the back burner, but really, I hope we are able to stay here. If the economy keeps going down down down, we’ll have to move (flee?)…but until that time, I still have hope.

What inspired this blog post today was this article – Can Ron Paul Really be Right About Everything? Please click the link. Read the article. Absorb the article. Reflect on the article. It really got to me – it explains WHY Libertarianism is logical. Why it’s common sense. I just loved it. I don’t care if you disagree with me. Some (lots?) of you will….but I know in my heart that this philosophy is right and true, and I hope this country is turned around by it, and I hope you will read the article with an open mind…and let it sink in a bit.

I wish there was something more I could do. Right now, I can educate myself and spread the word. I just hope it helps. Because my family and my country’s life depends on getting the word out. Depends on people learning. Depends on people taking action. Depends on an actual change and turnabout for this country. I just hope it’s soon enough to actually make a difference.

Sometimes she wakes up while I am in the shower in the morning and lays in our bed…I will come out & see her & say who’s that in our bed? Then she says it’s ME, OLIVIA! Like I don’t know…it’s seriously so so cute.

We had a great time on her birthday. I won a free night at a La Quinta, and there is a REALLY nice one in Twin Falls, about 2 hours east of here. It has an indoor pool, so that was a big hit! We went to see Shoshone Falls – gorgeous. I will try to post some pictures for you. She had so much fun in the pool – she had floaties on and was jumping in. I also got a little inner tube at the dollar store for her – she loved it. The pool was SO nice. We were sad to leave it. Other than that, there really isn’t much to do in Twin Falls – we had a nice breakfast at the hotel, and of course swam. We were there less than 24 hours…then we came home and met mom & dad at Chuck E Cheese. She told me she was going to dream about it that night as she was going to sleep (we always talk about good things for her to dream about in the hopes she doesn’t wake up crying from a bad dream- it usually works!) so she really really enjoyed chuck e cheese. The games at least!

That was written in April, whoops! I seriously have blog! pop up on my calendar every single Sunday…but life gets in the way. We went to the zoo a couple of weeks ago with grandpa – he had never been. It was fun – O got to feed Julius the giraffe again and loved it. Will see if I can embed the video on here. Then he took us to McD’s – her favorite. She doesn’t even weigh 32 pounds yet, so McD’s every once in awhile isn’t going to kill her…me maybe, but not her!

She has started swimming lessons. Just 5 weeks, 35 minutes a pop, but at least it gets her in the water to learn a few basics. She loves it and is not afraid of the water at all, thank goodness. Mike and I were both water bugs growing up, so I hope she is, too!

Let’s see…how to sum up the last 2 months…busy, but fun. It’s been the wettest spring ever here, but it’s finally getting warm…and hot (95 tomorrow!). Everything is still very green and pretty. It’s actually been nice! Last Friday, we took her to school then Mike and I took a 2-3 mile bike ride. She stayed at grandma & grandpa’s on Friday night, so we took a 6 mile bike ride on Saturday morning. So fun! I hadn’t been on a bike since I was 16, so I’m enjoying it. I like the exercise, too! Boise has the BEST greenbelt – you don’t have to go on the streets, you can literally bike around the whole city. It’s fantastic, and gorgeous. Mosquitos and heat are coming soon, so we are trying to enjoy it while we can!

I’m sure we’ve done more…I am watching Glee and LOVE it. Am in the middle of season 2 – just watched the Rocky Horror episode last night and it was excellent! Olivia loves it, too! Mike likes the music – the music from season 1 is great. Season 2 is good, too…I also finally watched the last season of Lost! It only took me a year…but it’s done and off of the DVR. It was good…I had to look up people’s opinions on what happened, but kind of understand now…or at least my own interpretation of it!

Olivia is still doing so great. Everyone loves her and gravitates towards her. She is almost 40″ tall, so has grown an inch and a half since February. Whew! She loves dresses and skirts (luckily since most of her pants are too short!) and is mostly picking out her clothes now. She is a picky eater, but when she is going through a growth spurt like the recent one, she’ll eat and eat and eat – it’s great to see. She loves carrots and fruits, so that’s lucky.

I won a $250 gas card – that’s nice – free gas for a couple of months! Have won some other good stuff, too – still a nice hobby. I have barely been entering any blog contests anymore, though they have rather good odds…I just have been trying to cut back and they take awhile. So I enter a few here and there and that does it. She is only 4 once and I have to enjoy it while I can – I don’t want to look back at this time of her life with regrets that I was on the computer too much, ya know?

Mike’s store is doing GREAT! He has over 30 people a day in the store now (open from 10-5:15 or so) and is buying lots, selling lots, and just really enjoying it. He has lots of regulars, some charity cases, a shoplifter that gave him his license for a loan, then stole a knife (!), some people who end up in jail for silly things (fishing after dark, etc) and all of the other things that go along with having a pawn shop! A squirrel got into the store and he and his regulars had to try to get them out – they finally did (silly squirrel set off the alarm at 6:30 am on a Sunday! Mike called the cops – before he knew it was a squirrel obviously – and headed over there to see what was up…thank god it was only a squirrel!) Anyway, he is really happy with it – I am happy that he is finally doing something he enjoys so much.

So, that’s about it. I’m sure I’ve forgotten tons, but oh well. Now that this is caught up, maybe I can start over, which is always my intention, by blogging more . And I need to post pics…I know…I’ll get there!

Have a good one!

I have been devouring this blog (Escape America Now / Advisory Services for Ex-Pats to Chile) over the last few days – it’s written by a 14 year expat that lives in Chile. He has SO much wonderful information on his blog that I can’t seem to stop reading it! The added benefit of it is that his fiscal views correspond to ours completely (though his social views COMPLETELY differ from mine – probably because I am an educated American woman and have a mind of my own & he thinks that equals radical feminism!). Anyway, his blog is just chock full of lots of honest information and I am really enjoying it – I am reading it backwards in time, but am reading every single article! There are so many articles that I am enjoying that I can’t link to them all, but the one I just read is 5 benefits of expatriation. More great reasons to leave! This one and this one are scary – but true. More pros and cons (mostly pros though!) of moving to Chile.

He is also very honest about some of the shortfalls of Chile, too, i.e. they seemingly lie a lot (can I live somewhere where I don’t know how to trust anyone?) and there are a lot of pickpockets (but very little major crime). I also read a book called Culture Shock that explains their customs – there are some definite differences that we would need to get used to! I would really miss my couponing…

This has been the major topic of conversation in our house the last week. Could we swing it? I mean, I am convinced that I WANT to go, but could we ACTUALLY do it? We would need jobs and we both are dead set against living in Santiago (I think about 5 million people? neither of us wants to live in a big city) but that is where the jobs are. La Serena is about 200,000 people, though, so if we could start a restaurant and teach english there, I think we could do it.

I’m just itching to do something new, shake up my life a bit. Mike is ready to go now. I know we need to visit 1st – if we don’t feel comfortable there on a vacation, there is no way we can actually uproot our life to move there. Mike’s Aunt Janet & Uncle Rich visited on Sunday & Aunt Janet told us to just do it – live without regrets. If only our money matched up with our dreams…

We have looked into flights (it’s over a thousand less to fly out of tijuana for instance) and boats (freighters so we could take the dogs) and shipping containers for some of our stuff (though I really would TRY not to take much!). I read a guy’s blog that drove from Maine all the way down, too! No way could I do that – I hate being in the car any more than a couple hours! I think the sooner we decide, the better though. If we wait too long, Olivia will be entrenched in school, activities, and with friends. Plus, we are just so comfortable here…but doesn’t everyone, at one time or another, just want to start over? But it’s so scary…decisions, decisions.

Anyway, bottom line, we need to visit. Then we can decide where all of this talking and dreaming is going! I hope it lives up to our (high) expectations!

La Serena, Valparaiso, Antofagasta. These cities were unheard of to me until the last few days. But, then I read this article: Moving To Chile, Part Two

That could totally be my list! Except I started my research by weather, much as I did when we moved to Idaho. I can’t take the heat, don’t mind winter, etc. So I would replace her no spiders/snakes requirement with a mild climate. My research began last week (though we have been talking about it for over a year) after I read one of the scariest articles ever: Making the Chicken Run – it did make me want to RUN!

So, I started looking at climates around the world. I can’t take high humidity + high heat. If it’s a bit humid and 60′s, that’s great. If it’s high humidity + 80, it’s a no go for me. Started out in the Eastern Block – Bulgaria to be exact. They are up and coming in their capitalism and freedom. Nice weather. But, after researching it, I decided it was TOO far and TOO foreign for me. New Zealand would be my 1st choice, but it’s almost impossible to move there. Switzerland=too expensive.

So I started looking at Canada. Too cold, too much rain. South America was next. Most of it is too hot and humid. Argentina, Ecuador, and Bolivia still seem too corrupt. Then, I found Chile. Patagonia might actually be too chilly year round (oh, but it’s so beautiful). But the central and near north regions? PERFECT. I’m ready to go. If there’s any time in our lives where we could pack up and go, it’s now. We don’t have many friends here because we have a bit of hermit in us. Olivia is young enough to adapt quickly and would not be leaving friends. Obviously employment is an issue, but I think we could find a job there relatively easily. They have casinos if nothing else…and pawn shops…and real estate.

photo credit: maps of the world

There is very low unemployment there. Little corruption. VERY stable economy. Real estate is not as expensive. Cost of living is way lower. It’s gorgeous there. The climate looks perfect (60′s and 70′s year round in the areas I am looking!-think Southern CA). I could go on. Low crime rate. I had 7 years of spanish, so I think I could pick it up again quickly. Good international schools… A Family Affair In Chile – In the Beginning Basically we could start over and, I think, be really happy.

The only thing I can think of that would hold us back is family. It’s pretty far away! But since we would be in the southern hemisphere, Christmas is in the summer! I bet we would get visitors for that . It would be hard to have NO ONE we know down there. I mean, moving from Indy to Vegas when I was 22 and knowing no one was one thing, but moving to a different country and HEMISPHERE is another! But really, that is the only con I can think of. It’s a biggie, for sure, but I just feel the need to get out of here.

“Chile to me is what the United States will never be again.” is a quote from this great article – Why Invest In Chile? A North American In Chile

When we moved to Idaho, it all started like this – looking at weather and climate. We knew that California was out because of the cost of living…Arizona is too hot…Oregon and Washington, too rainy. You get the picture. I really love it here. I really do. I love being an American, and out of every state across the US, I am SO glad I am in Idaho. If I didn’t think that our country was falling as fast as it is, I would stay here forever. We are moving down on the economic freedom index. Chile is moving up. Our dollar is falling. The Chilean peso is rising. Our inflation is about to go sky high. No inflation in Chile. Corruption is getting worse here. Opposite for Chile. The incarceration rate in the US is #1 IN THE WORLD. List of countries by incarceration rate For a country such as ours, that is outrageous!

Yes, it all sounds romantic and fun, but could we ACTUALLY do it? Actually leave our once great country and move to South America? Become expats? Sell most of our possessions? That is the question on my mind, and I think we could. We hope to visit within a year to see if it’s for us, then we may be saying Hola from Chile! I am reading blogs and forums from people actually living there. We are going to get Olivia’s passport application turned in. Are we dreaming? perhaps, but isn’t it exciting?!

Edited to add: Mike reads Lew Rockwell every day – this was on there today – Escape from America continues – interesting, huh, and it really proves that we are not alone!

I found one more thing to add to the con list – earthquakes. Chile is at the edge of a tectonic plate, so the whole country has lots, and I mean lots, of earthquakes! Scary. I have never been in, nor even felt, an earthquake. So, that’s 2 big cons now – family and earthquakes. But there are so many pros – what to do, what to do. On a side note, though, I have decided on the city – La Serena. I can’t wait to visit!!

Now THAT would be awesome! But, my monthly bill would go up because I would have to have a data plan. So, I’ll keep dreaming for now…

My eardrum burst again. So painful – luckily I had the pain meds this time & didn’t have to drive to the ER at 3:30 am like last time! My eustachian tube is just not draining when I get any kind of infection. So, I may have to get tubes put in. blech.

So, this week I really didn’t get much accomplished because I was in bed for 2 1/2 days. I did get a lot done when I was actually at work, though – always a good thing!

We are going to go to Twin Falls for one night – don’t know when yet, but sometime! I won a one night stay at a La Quinta that I really don’t want to waste, so I was looking at places with La Quintas – Twin Falls isn’t the most exciting place, but it’s really pretty and has huge waterfalls that Olivia will LOVE, and it’s only 2 hours away. Our wonderful dogsitter will stay while we take a quick one night trip – need to get away even for a bit!

Happy Birthday to my dad, and I can’t believe I am almost 39. When I was talking to him, he can’t believe he has a daughter that’s almost 39, either! Next year will be hard on me I think…I guess we’ll see.

I’ve read the 1st 2 Harry Potter books – so good. The movies really followed the books well. I should be receiving the Hunger Games this week – there was a problem with shipping them and I just got it resolved this week – can’t wait to read that one. And I have always loved the Clan of the Cave Bear books – I ordered The Shelters of Stone off of paperback swap, because the 6th and final book is coming out I think this month. It’s been awhile since I have read them, but I think I still have the others if I need to go back and read them again! I am really trying to read more. I haven’t been entering blog contests nearly as much – in fact I am over 2 weeks behind – because I am trying to wean myself off of them. I love winning, but really, it was taking up too much time! Time that I can never get back. I would rather read to set a good example for Olivia.

Have a good one!

Well, we’ve had a fun couple of months. Mike turned 40 in February! He actually had 3 birthday dinners. His mom came out the week before his birthday – we had a lot of fun.

The Friday before his birthday, we went on a sleigh ride up the mountain. It was pretty warm that day, and in the 30′s up top – really nice weather. We rode the sleigh to a cabin where they serve dinner – it was yummy! We brought wine, had steak and shrimp, and just had a nice time. Olivia had her 1st babysitter – a lady from work that loves kids – I felt totally safe with her there, and she and Olivia had a blast! I am so thankful to have found someone to look after her since mom, dad, me, mike, and darlene all went to dinner. It was nice to have an adult’s night out. Of course we were home by 9:30, but still! We did have an ‘only in Idaho’ moment on the way home, though – while driving through a downtown neighborhood, we came upon flashing lights and lots of activities on the road. Lo and behold, a cow (or bull, it was dark) was in the middle of the street and they were trying to get it to back into a trailer! It was pretty funny!

We went to the Discovery Center (it’s a hands on children’s museum with lots of things to see, do, and experiment with) on that Saturday – we spent a few hours there and had a great time. Dad worked for Mike so he didn’t have to shut down the store. Sunday, he did shut down the store so Mike could spend the day with us. We went to the zoo. It was a really nice weekend – it hit 60! – so the weather was just perfect. Sunday night Darlene took us to Joe’s Crab Shack for bday dinner #2. So yummy, and Olivia loves the singing. Monday I only worked a half day so Darlene wouldn’t be bored at home all day and we went to see a movie in the afternoon – Just Go with it. It was funny. And so nice to be able to go to a movie in the middle of the afternoon!

On his actual birthday, we went out with my parents to Tucanos for dinner #3. HUGE salad bar, then all you can eat meat – they come around with all different kinds of meats & you can have as much or as little as you want. It was really good – will definitely go back.

Other than all that excitement, really not much going on. Olivia is growing so fast. Her hair is getting darker by the day, and she is getting taller by the second. We love having conversations with her – to see everything through her eyes, but have her explain it in her way is priceless. She is a non-stop talker, that’s for sure…when she can’t think of anything to say, she says I love you. So, since she can’t stand silence, she says I love you 50,000 times a day at least. She is learning lots in school & is just doing great – she did get in trouble for talking too much (which is the same thing my sister always got in trouble for, too!) and wiggling during naptime, but overall she is doing great. I love running errands with her now, too – we ran 3 errands yesterday & had a good time.

I took awhile off from doing the drugstore deals. Just got kinda burnt out, and nothing looked that worthwhile – the last month, however, there have been more deals so I am back at it! Rite Aid has given me sooo much stuff for free lately – love it! For example – Friday I went and got 2 eyeliners, 4 nivea lipcares, and 2 packs of butterfinger snackerz (yum) for .82. My subtotal was -.02, tax was .84, and I paid .82. Really, how can you beat that? But the reallllly great deal was on Prilosec for mom (she has to take it because of other meds) – 42 count boxes are 24.99, but they had a few deals going at the same time! 1st there was a coupon in the paper for $8 off of 2…I had 2 of those. There was also a $3 off 1. Then , for every 2 you bought, you get a $25 visa card. Third, for every box you bought, you got $7 back from Rite Aid. So, I paid $11 TOTAL for 6 boxes of prilosec! How fun is that. I love it when it works out like that!

Mike’s store is going well. He is getting people in to consign things, so the store has lots of good stuff to sell. He made a website, too, check it out! Boise Pawn & Gold

I really wanted to have this blog as a journal. I have never been able to keep up a journal for my entire life, so why I think I can keep it up here is beyond me. It’s a good goal, and I put it on my calendar to remind me, but it just gets pushed to the bottom of the to do list every week. I feel guilty for not recording more of her childhood…I really need to try to do better. For me…for memories.

That’s about it. She is going to be 4 next month, and I have no idea what we are doing for her birthday. She is also on spring break that week, so I realllly don’t know what to do! What do people do when their kids are out of school? Seriously – I don’t have 5 weeks of vacation during the year to take off when she does! It’s a dilemma…anyway, I will try to write and post more pics soon – have a good one!

It was super fun though! We also went to our parade downtown – it was really snowing, but beautiful and we all really enjoyed it. We went sledding, too!

The 2nd week of December, I had jury duty. To make a week long story short, I was chosen for the jury – it was a criminal case. It was the most interesting and challenging thing I have done in a long time. I couldn’t stop thinking all week long that I was a part of changing a person’s life, because we found him guilty on 2 counts and not guilty on 2 counts. The people on the jury were so smart, thoughtful, & intelligent; it was truly amazing. We pondered and deliberated every word of the counts. It was very different than I had imagined it, and I missed a lot of life that week, but it feels like a once in a lifetime experience.

I then had to get back into the swing of things at work and at home. I wasn’t sequestered, but really, it felt like I was just out of the loop that whole week, so it definitely took me some time to get back into the groove. But, I did of course – Christmas was coming! I bought all of my presents online. Free shipping so I didn’t have to go to the post office once – how can I pass that up? On the 23rd, my eardrum burst. Talk about pain – wow. It’s all in your head, too, so it really feels like you are going to die any second. At 3:30 am, I couldn’t take it anymore & drove myself to the emergency room. I then drove myself to the 24 hour pharmacy (thank you Rite aid) to get some meds. My ear started draining & drained for over 2 days. Seriously nasty. So, I wasn’t quite myself over the holiday, but had fun anyway. Then it was Christmas time – we all got what we wanted for Christmas of course, and Olivia had a blast. She loved everything she got – from Bugsby books to a pink camera to a dollhouse to art supplies – you name it, she got it! It was really fun. Mom & Dad taught us a new card game that we ended up playing all weekend long – Oh Hell. Wow was it addicting and fun!

Olivia got a betta fish (which she named Flower), a dwarf frog (which she named Frosty) and the tank/equipment from Aunt Abby. We then wanted to get an algae eater so I wouldn’t have to clean the tank as often, so we went and bought one (the 1st Walmart didn’t have fish tanks, the 2nd Walmart I couldn’t find anyone to help us, so we finally gave in & went to Petco which she loved because they had hamsters, ferrets, and birds to look at – plus they were friendly and knowledgeable of course). Anyway, she named the Corey (algae eater) Kangaroo Lightbulb! She came up with it in the car on the way home from the pet store & it stuck. So, we feed them every morning and every evening, and they are all getting along great. Frosty is hilarious!

Olivia was off of school the last 2 weeks of the year, so she got to go to Dainey’s the 1st week, then I stayed home with her the 2nd week. It was nice to have time off to be lazy, take baths, read a book, get caught up on watching TV shows, & spend time with her! New Year’s was uneventful, as the last couple of weeks have been as well. I can’t seem to get motivated to get things done around the house. I get on a little roll and get a few things organized, but then lose the zeal & just get bored again. I got bored with both of my blogs & redid them both. Still not 100% happy so they may change soon, but for right now, they are done… School called on Thursday to tell us that Olivia had a fever of 103, so I only worked a half day at work. We ended up going to the doctor & getting ‘the pink stuff’ because she has a virus & an ear infection. She was feeling better by Friday afternoon & is back to her old self. I have been watching Damages. I watched the entire 1st season last week – part of the reason I got nothing else done – but it was so good I couldn’t stop watching it. It’s on Roku, which is seriously one of the best things we’ve ever gotten. We love it! I watched Eat Pray Love today – very good. I never read the book but will someday. So, I think that’s about it. I’m sure I have forgotten lots, but for now, there is your update.

She was the cutest ladybug ever for halloween. She got to dress up at school, then come to my work for trick or treating, then she got to dress up again, of course, on Sunday for Halloween. She did great – Dad, Mike, and I were with her, and she walked for 1 1/2 hours straight! Got lots of candy, said trick or treat and thank you almost every time! Everyone thought she was just adorable. We thought so too, of course. It was such a cute costume.

She cut her hair again – with safety scissors this time. It was a perfect mullet. I couldn’t even look at her. It was awful. It’s growing back, of course, but wow, it was bad.

Mike got 2% of the vote – 4696 votes I think was the total. It was fun watching the numbers come in!

I got my 1st jury summons ever…we’ll see what happens. It’s for the beginning of December.

It’s been really busy lately…and I know it will only get busier as we creep closer to the holidays. We had our indian summer last week – it was absolutely gorgeous. Wish it was always like that!

This is enough for now…the laundry is calling!
